Yoga Mats


Yoga mats are considered to be practically the main accessory used during yoga sessions. This type of activity does not require special equipment, apart from a suitable mat which can provide a supportive foundation to do exercises on.

Some yoga exercises require stretching and movements which might cause the person to slip if there is no proper grip on the ground. Hence yoga mats essentially serve this purpose. They are made from special materials which prevent such accidents. Apart from this they help to provide a comfortable base for the person who is often barefooted during yoga exercises. Yoga mats are in fact sometimes also referred to as sticky mats or non-slip mats.

Most yoga mats are manufactured in similar sizes, often approximately two meters long and about sixty centimeters wide. There are also some mats which are a bit wider. These are requested in case of other exercises.

The thickness of yoga mats varies. The thicker the mat, the more comfortable and padded it will be. Most yoga mats through the years were made mainly from PVC, rubber and TPE. Due to the increase in environmental friendly materials, more awareness has been placed on the type of materials used to manufacture such mats from. In fact most yoga mat are advertised or labeled as being free from harmful materials or substances.

Yoga mats do not require much attention with regards to cleaning. The most important thing is to wipe them with a damp cloth on a regular basis, or ideally after each use, and then allow them to air dry. This is especially due to the fact that after yoga exercises there may often be traces of sweat present on the mat. One may also use some specialized mat cleaners which will contain mild disinfectants to get rid of any bacteria.
